From used instruments to an autonomous physics laboratory

Research acquisition plan · 8 November 2026 · Proposal, not a completed experiment

1. Spectroscopy and optical measurement

Candidate: Ocean Optics USB2000+ at ¥1,680. Verify device identity, calibration and optical configuration before acquisition. Proposed experiments: LED spectral response, interference filters, diffraction gratings, photoluminescence screening, instrument-drift compensation and active-learning wavelength selection.

2. Time-domain sensing

Candidate: Rigol DS1054Z at ¥1,350, or damaged unit at ¥1,000. A four-channel scope would allow synchronous optical, electrical, acoustic and vibration signals. Check all channels, sample-rate conditions, triggering, included probes and actual upgrade state. The cheaper cracked-screen unit is not the default choice.

3. Next search categories

4. Closed-loop experimental protocol

  1. Define competing physical hypotheses and measurable discriminators.
  2. Measure baseline instrument noise, response, repeatability and calibration.
  3. Choose the next intervention by expected information gain, not visual novelty.
  4. Record timestamped raw observations, control settings, sensor firmware, environmental variables and uncertainty.
  5. Reserve blinded hold-out trials for validation. Report failures and artifacts alongside discoveries.

5. Deal scoring

Rank candidate listings by delivered price, verified function, measurement capability, integration cost, repair risk, availability and reproducibility. Seller claims remain unverified until independent evidence exists. Currency conversion, import VAT and shipping must be included before calling a listing a bargain.
